Have you dealt with my experiences and feelings before?
Often the answer is Yes, but everyone is different in how they experience it. We can always take advice from colleagues or our supervisors, we also refer clients to an appropriately trained therapist if required.
Can I tell you anything?
Yes, it’s paramount that the client feels they are safe to talk about anything, without fear of judgement and to be treated with unconditional positive regard. Everything is confidential and stays in the room although there might be times when a therapist will need to disclose certain information, this should be discussed during your first appointment.
How many sessions will I need?
Depends on the individual, their circumstances and why you are attending as everyone is different. Some counsellors will not state number of sessions needed as the therapeutic relationship is about empowering the client. This should be discussed with you during your sessions on an ongoing process.
Does this sound silly?
No, it never does!
There are never any silly questions in the room, if it is a concern of yours then it is a concern that can be discussed.
How can it if it is how you feel?
Do you know what I mean?
A therapist may not know initially what you mean at certain times but by discussing and clarifying how things feel for you, the therapist will be able to fully understand how you think and feel.
Am I broken
No! maybe stuck in a certain way of thinking or situation.
Is it ok to talk about this?
Often referring to sex.
It is okay to talk about anything and everything in therapy. It is about trust and helping clients to achieve what they are trying to work through.
Is this normal/am I normal?
Good question, normal is to you whatever that may be, a therapist is not here to make a judgement on that at all.
How often do I need to come for therapy?
Everyone is different and come into therapy at different stages of their life, so some might need more sessions than others. The frequency will depend on your availability and that of the therapist and would be mutually agreed.
When can I expect to feel better?
You will be able to start to notice small changes in emotions and behaviours over a period of time depending on the reasons you have entered into therapy and the support you have around you.
